Territorial Tallahassee Children’s Booklet
In the year 2020, in preparation for Tallahassee and Leon County’s 2024 bicentennial, the Tallahassee Historical Society proposed several projects. One of them was an online, interactive history of Territorial Tallahassee to be used by teachers and fourth and fifth grade students as a gateway to the years 1821-1845, the years between Florida’s purchase by the U.S. from Spain and when Florida became a state. Utilizing the talent and research of a number of historians of both local and national renown, as well as the archives of several institutions, the five year project was completed in the fall of 2025 and placed on the historical society’s website for the use of all teachers, free of charge.
It is the hope of the Tallahassee Historical Society that this project will inspire new generations of students as to the importance of history, and in particular the history of Middle Florida, where different cultures came into contact as early at the 1540s, and which remains a region rich in cultural traditions today. To teachers, we offer this project as an aid in helping to educate students as to the rich traditions of their state.
The project would not have been possible without the support of the City of Tallahassee and Leon County, Visit Tallahassee, and the Council on Culture and Arts. We would like to thank all of them.
This project was made possible through the generous support of the following sponsors:
